Important update for all animal lovers!
Fantastic to see that the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill passed another stage to becoming law.
Lancashire people are huge animal lovers and we want to see our pets are well treated before they become part of our families.
Some puppies and kittens are taken from their parents too early and those smuggled into the country are avoiding health checks and vaccinations that could lead to rabies or other diseases.
The Animal Welfare Bill aims to ban underage and pregnant animals from travelling and to stop the importation of ‘mutilated’ animals, such as puppies with cropped ears. If the law is passed, all imported pets would need proper health checks and vaccinations.
The Bill also aims to curb pet smuggling. It is believed that 50% of the industry is either illegal or unlicensed and that includes animals coming from outside the UK.
The Bill has cross-party support and the support of animal charities like the Dogs Trust, the British Veterinary Association - BVA, and the RSPCA (England & Wales). I support the bill and I hope it will soon become law.
Thank you to Selaine Saxby MP for leading on this important issue.
Ps for those asking, the puppy is called Nigel!
