Community Payback is an alternative to custodial sentencing. Convicted criminals do over 5 million hours of community payback every year. The projects they work on visibly benefit local communities and include things like planting trees, working in charity shops and clearing litter. This work enables offenders to repay their community alongside learning new skills that can reduce reoffending.
I went to visit a community spring clean project at Moss Side Community Centre to find out more. It was great to meet the hard-working team that organise these projects. One of their recent projects was to paint the fence at Bishop Rawstorne Church of England Academy.
You can nominate local projects for a community clean up, all sort of schemes are eligible including removing graffiti, gardening, picking litter and more besides. This link has more details gov.uk/nominate-community-payback-project
