I had a such great chat with Chris from Monks Training Services Ltd in Leyland about skills and apprenticeships. We chatted about the shortage of skills in construction and how to sell the industry to school leavers and women.
Monks Training Services runs training in pretty much every area of construction, from heavy machinery to winter maintenance, and they’ve even got a bootcamp course to teach essential workplace skills. They are training up the next generation of construction workers and are keen to become an apprenticeship provider.
We agreed that more needs to be done to promote jobs in construction in our schools and colleges. These jobs are the backbone of our economy and have so many great benefits including:
Great pay once qualified
Skills for life
The opportunity for world travel
Pride in your work - I got the chance to talk about my own experiences in construction and engineering with my dad and what a positive it is when you can say, ‘I built that’.
There are great opportunities out there, not just for young people, but for anyone who wants to retrain.
